We shape our charitable efforts by asking two questions: what are society's true unmet needs? What can we do for caregivers and patients beyond drug therapy?
Working with NGOs Direct Relief and Project HOPE, we've donated medicines, increased public awareness, and positively impacted the way life-changing diseases are understood and managed. We've collaborated with medical, relief, and patient advocacy communities to identify needs, sometimes taking medication into regions where we have no commercial presence. And, we've provided enzyme replacement therapies on a charitable basis to those diagnosed with Gaucher disease, Fabry disease, and MPS II.
Shire is also committed to responding to the tragedies that shake our planet. Most recently, Shire contributed $20,000 each to both AmeriCares and Direct Reliefs humanitarian aid efforts in Nepal following major earthquakes. Shire employees also donated $10,000 to Direct Relief which Shire matched. ln 2014, Shire donated $50,000 plus employee-matched funds to Ebola-related care through Direct Relief and AmeriCares. In 2013, we responded to Typhoon Haiyan with a $45,000 gift through NGO partners. And every year Shire supports an AmeriCares airlift event, taking employees, funds and supplies to countries like Guatemala and Nicaragua, where the need is great. Additionally, Shire plays an active role as a board member of the Partnership for Quality Medical Donations (PQMD), a global alliance of non-profit and corporate organizations developing and promoting high standards for donations of medical supplies and services in underserved communities and in areas affected by disaster. Shire has been a Board member of this unique alliance since 2013.
