Shire’s long-term success depends on our talented and dedicated workforce. We believe that all Shire positions should offer opportunity for professional development. A core component of attaining our business aspirations is identifying and nurturing top talent and helping all employees realize their full potential. This means we need to understand and leverage our employees’ strengths, fostering an environment where people can bring their “whole self” to work.
We expect all employees to behave in a way that is: Positive, Accountable and Results-driven. If they manage people, Shire’s leaders are expected to also be Great People Managers. These behavioral expectations are embedded into our people practices to ensure we’re selecting, developing, rewarding and managing performance in a way that reinforces a high performance culture.
Shire’s approach to development is influenced by the 70-20-10 model. This emphasizes the value of on-the-job experiences (70%), supplemented by a blend of informal coaching and mentoring (20%) and more formal training or education (10%). Shire employees own their development, in partnership with their manager.
IDENTIFYING HIGH PERFORMERS
Our goal is to have identified successors in place for leadership positions and critical roles. We regularly assess our talent to identify high performance and provide further attention to those who display leadership potential. Shire leaders are responsible for ensuring that high-performing employees are rewarded for their performance and prepared for future opportunities to continue to grow.
SUPPORTING LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
Over the recent years, we have matured as a company and focused our strategy to become a leading biotech company. To that end, we are currently building a solid foundation of programs and processes that reinforce our cultural aspirations. These include an integrated New Employee Integration process and embedding Key Leadership Behaviors into all of our Performance Management and Talent processes. As we continue to grow and evolve, Shire is investing in more development options including online learning, Ted-Talk videos, traditional and virtual classrooms, targeted learning for key populations using learning maps, informal peer networks and other innovative methods.
Our compliance training ensures that all our employees understand relevant laws, policies and regulations specific to the country in which they operate, as well as those that transcend national boundaries. We also conduct mandatory training on our Code of Ethics which clearly articulates our ethical expectations and principles upon which our business operates.
