Donations deliver boost to local schools in Massachusetts
16 Sep 2011
Recycling is about much more than just recycling cans, tins and paper. Indeed, at our site in Lexington, Massachusetts we are donating outdated manufacturing equipment to local schools, which helps minimise waste and provide others with important resources.
Our Lexington site recently donated over $35,000 in retired manufacturing and laboratory equipment to two technical schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, US. While outdated in Shire’s rapidly changing high-tech world, the schools tell us they are delighted with the equipment, which they find enhances their laboratory capacities and career development programs.
Ernest F. Houle, Director of Community Education at Minuteman Career and Technical High School in Massachusetts, says that the donation “represents a significant contribution to efforts to update our laboratories and curriculum and it significantly upgrades our bio manufacturing training.”
Meanwhile, James Vogel, President of The BioProcess Institute, Rhode Island, tells us that Shire’s donation will “give students access to up-to-date equipment and better prepare them for their careers in biotechnology.”
We are currently liaising with other schools about further equipment donations.
If this is something that would be of interest to your school, please email shirecorporateresponsibility@shire.com.
