Shire Appoints Dr. Jeffrey Jonas Senior Vice President, R&D, Specialty Pharmaceuticals

Basingstoke, UK and Philadelphia, US – July 23, 2008 – Shire Limited (LSE: SHP, NASDAQ: SHPGY), the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, today announced that Dr. Jeffrey Jonas has been appointed Senior Vice President of Research & Development for its Specialty Pharmaceuticals business. Dr. Jonas will be responsible for establishing the strategic direction of Shire Specialty Pharmaceuticals’ new product pipeline, including achievement of R&D milestones. Dr. Jonas has a broad range of experience in senior roles in research and development, and has been responsible for a number of successful INDs and NDAs for products spanning multiple therapeutic classes. Most recently, he served as Executive Vice President at Isis Pharmaceuticals in charge of clinical and pre-clinical development, regulatory affairs, quality assurance and compliance, and had broad responsibility for the product pipeline. Prior to joining Isis, Dr. Jonas was Chief Medial Officer and Executive Vice President at Forest Laboratories, Inc. He began his career at Upjohn Laboratories. Dr. Jonas has also been a successful entrepreneur. He founded and led AVAX Technologies, a leader in autologous cell therapy and individualized therapy. Dr. Jonas led AVAX through several successful financings, including an initial public offering in 1997. In 2001, he co-founded SCEPTOR Industries, a biotechnology company involved in biodefense surveillance. Dr. Jonas has published more than 70 scientific papers and chapters and has received a number of awards. Dr. Jonas received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and completed a residency in psychiatry at Harvard. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed Chief Resident in psychopharmacology at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
