Conducting Business With Integrity - Working with Health Care Professionals in the United States
Shire is committed to doing business with integrity and complying with the US Physician Payments Sunshine Act via the Shire Health Partnerships. IlluminatedTM Program. Like most pharmaceutical companies, Shire depends on the medical and scientific community for a broad range of activities, from conducting clinical trials to providing insight about patient care needs. Through our interactions, we receive valuable information that can help us better serve health care professionals and patients. These partnerships are important in helping us to develop innovative treatment options.
Our transparency efforts, via the Shire Health Partnerships Program, reflect our commitment to make our interactions with health care professionals appropriate, compliant, and consistent with our efforts to support patients.
Shire interacts with health care professionals (HCPs) in a variety of ways, including:
- Shire-sponsored clinical trials and research
Shire conducts its own clinical trials and takes the responsibility for the initiation, management, data analysis, and/or financing. - Investigator-sponsored trials (ISTs)
Shire may provide funding and/or medication for unsolicited research developed and conducted independently by an HCP. - Peer-to-Peer Speaker Programs
Shire conducts speaker programs in order to educate HCPs on our products and the medical conditions for which they are indicated. These programs are held in accordance with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory requirements and the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Code on Interactions with Health Care Professionals.
- Speakers: Shire contracts with HCPs as speakers based on their expertise and qualifications within the therapeutic areas related to our products. Speakers are never selected as a reward or incentive to prescribe our products.
- Participants: Where permissible, Shire provides modest meals to participants in our Speaker Programs. Participants are not compensated for their attendance. - Advising and Consulting Services
Shire contracts with HCPs only when there is a legitimate business need to be addressed. Often this may be to help us understand how HCPs work with their patients to manage a disease, and how Shire may develop innovative treatments to help meet the needs of patients. If travel is required, Shire will reimburse for reasonable travel-related expenses related to the service. - Meals
Shire provides modest meals to HCPs in conjunction with presentations about our products and the disease states for which they are indicated. All such meals provided are in accordance with PhRMA Code. - Educational items
Shire occasionally provides items to HCPs that are strictly educational in nature and intended to help improve patient care. These items are distributed in accordance with PhRMA Code.
